WASHINGTON, D.C. – This December, the Path Forward Coalition is celebrating the retail and restaurant opportunities that exist for employees during the holidays. According to the National Retail Federation, retailers are expected to hire between 640,000 and 690,000 seasonal workers this holiday season. Additionally, 84 percent of more than 1,000 restaurants polled in a 2015 survey reported that they were hiring additional staff to handle the bigger crowds associated with holiday shopping foot traffic.
“As restaurant and retails businesses plan for the surge in activity that takes place this time of year, they not only set up displays and extend their hours, but they also prepare behind the scenes by hiring extra staff,” said Path Forward spokesperson Jamie Rhoades. “The holiday hiring period presents younger workers with the opportunity to learn important skills on the job and is also a valuable time for mid-level employees to strengthen their management and leadership skills as they onboard and train new hires.”
This monthly spotlight is the eighth in a series of initiatives that Path Forward is rolling out to call attention to different roles the service sector plays in empowering millions of people with the tools, benefits and skills they need to learn, grow and build lifelong careers.
Path Forward is a project of the National Retail Federation and the National Restaurant Association that serves as a voice for hundreds of thousands of job-creating businesses across the country that are invested in providing workers a path forward to new opportunities.
